HALLOWEEN HORROR: THE WAITING LADY OF ARDGILLAN CASTLE

Beware - never keep a lady waiting…

Ardgillan Castle is a country house located near the town of Balbriggan, in the Fingal area of County Dublin, Ireland. Built in the eighteenth century for the Taylor family, it remained in their hands for generations. It is a stunning building set within extensive green parkland. Its ghost is said to appear throughout the year, but if local lore is to be believed, seeking her out on Halloween night could put your very life in danger.

As with so many tales of the supernatural, the story of this shade is a tragic one, with origins stretching back to 1853. In November of that year, Lady Langford was staying at the castle while her husband was away in Scotland. One day, at around midday, she decided to walk down to the beach and bathe in the sea.

Accompanied by her maid, Charlotte Louisa Bates, she made her way to the shore. According to the account of the inquest, her maid expressed concern about the conditions and warned her not to venture too far out. Lady Langford, however, appeared confident that there was nothing to fear.

She had not been in the water long when she appeared to lose her footing. Desperately, her maid tried to reach her, but the waves drove her back. A gardener also attempted to recover Lady Langford, only to be defeated by the heavy swell.

Eventually, a boat reached her and brought her ashore, but by then it was too late. Her body was carried back to the castle, where all attempts to revive her failed. The coroner’s verdict was accidental drowning.

But if local whispers are to be believed, Lady Langford never truly left Ardgillan. Her spirit is said to retrace the route from the beach, up the steps and across the bridge towards the grand house, searching for the husband and family she left behind. The crossing, which spans the coast road and railway line, is known locally as the Lady’s Stairs.

Another version tells of a woman whose husband drowned while swimming. Unable to accept his loss, she kept watch from the bridge, staring out to sea in the hope that he would return. Eventually, she too died, but death did not end her lonely vigil.

And yet this is not the most terrifying part of the legend. One darker telling warns that any living person who visits the Lady’s Stairs on All Hallows’ Eve should beware. On this most sinister of nights, the waiting woman is said to become something altogether more dangerous.

Should you encounter her on the bridge, she may seize you and throw you over the side to your doom.

Dear reader, you have been warned.
